Matt Root B.Ed (Hons) - The Root Academy Founder
My first experience of cricket coaching came during my degree in Physical Education in 1988 during which I developed one of the world’s first interactive video databases of cricket skills. It’s fair to say that my approach to coaching has been fine-tuned over the years!
As a player, I captained Notts U19 and played a number of county 2nd team games. I won the Bassetlaw League (now ECB Notts Premier League) with Notts and 5 Yorkshire League titles and a National KO title with Sheffield Collegiate CC, where I played with former England Captain Michael Vaughan. I represented the Yorkshire League for a number of years and in 2015 captained an MCC tour overseas.
As a coach, I have taught my boys the fundamentals of the game, emphasising the importance of simplicity and hard work. We didn’t always get it right but it’s amazing what application and dedication can achieve.
I acknowledge that the game is constantly changing so by creating a team of dynamic and experienced coaches at The Root Academy, I hope that the same coaching principles can be applied and delivered via the very latest coaching tools.
Ben Stephens - Executive Director
Ben and I first met in my playing days on an overseas MCC cricket tour. Since then, Ben has established himself as a highly respected figure in youth cricket in Essex, and it is his drive and enthusiasm for working with young cricketers that persuaded me that he is the perfect partner to oversee operational activities for The Root Academy.
Ben and I have very similar coaching principles, with a focus on keeping the technical aspects of the game as simple as possible. His passion for the game is evident in the variety of content in his coaching sessions and is extremely popular with those under his guidance. I am looking forward to seeing the results of Ben’s input at our coaching camps this year.
